Electric fireplaces continue to grow in the market as more and more people are drawn to their ease and convenience. Many homes might not come with pre-installed fireplaces. Apartments almost never have fireplaces, but that doesnt mean you cant have one of your own. Electric fireplaces make it possible for anyone to enjoy the look and feel of a real, natural fire.

Fooling Your Guests with Electric Fireplaces
Place heaters and radiators are much less attractive than an actual fireplace. Space heaters are often big and clunky. They can also be dangerous if there are children present, since they dont look nearly as menacing to a child as an open flame does. They do their job, yes, but an electric fireplace does it with style.

Electric fireplaces do not take up nearly as much room as some might think. There are models with slim profiles, taking up less than eight inches of depth into your room. Dimensions vary by design, but each does try to focus on taking up as little room as possible.

Electric fireplaces can save you money over using your homes heating system. You wont be required to buy logs or fuel to get the fire started. You also wont have to worry as much about heating costs because of how powerful electric fireplaces can be. It is not uncommon for two rooms to be kept comfortable by one fireplace.

Gas logs are a convenient way to keep your living room or family room warm without having to deal with natural logs. Gas logs are less expensive to maintain than electric logs and require less chimney cleaning because of the lack of smoke and soot residue in the flue. If you want the look and feel of a natural fire, you can do it without having to chop wood by using a gas log.

How Do You Make Gas Logs?
Gas logs are made commonly made from ceramic, which helps conduct the heat without posing a fire hazard. It is sculpted and painted to look like natural wood, and is reinforced using heavy wires. You can find logs in an array of different wood designs, from oak to twisted pine.

Gas logs vary in price depending on the size of the fixture you choose. Smaller logs measuring about twelve inches can be as low as $200, while larger log designs (up to a whopping sixty inches) can be just under $1,000, but these designs are for large fire pits or outdoor fireplaces. You can get a decent sized gas log measuring twenty four inches for about $250 if you look around a bit.

Gas logs burn using natural gas, which means you dont have to worry about smoke building up in the flue or filling your house if it clogs. Natural gas is also relatively inexpensive, and a tank can usually last for many uses depending on how long you burn your log. Count on approximately eight or nine two-hour burns from a twenty inch log.

Floor registers cover the ventilation exits in your home, to safely facilitate moving warm or cold air through the house. The ones that came pre-installed in your home were probably very simple. They were probably simple metal frames, maybe painted white, and thats it. You can dress up your heating and air conditioning system using floor registers.

Models of Floor Registers
Simple floor registers are soft metals like aluminum, and they feature very little in the way of decoration, if any at all. There are floor registers that are made with wrought iron, which is heavy, but can be very ornate. Brass is also used quite often to make floor registers, but it can be very expensive. Check with several retailers before making a choice.

One of the chief considerations is the dimensions of the vent. You should definitely measure them before choosing a specific floor register. Some registers can be custom made, but this will add to the cost. It isnt always a problem, however, since there are plenty of ventilation systems that use standard measurements, and you can buy registers directly from them.

The Internet has become a great place to find various fireplace products. There are manufacturers around the country that are using the web to sell their work, and reach a broader customer base. You can easily find countless designs online that would look great in your home.

Bellows are great tools to have for getting a fire started and keeping it lit once the fire gets going. Bellows have been around for centuries, and continue to thrive today. They are inexpensive fireplace tools that will last for years, keeping you warm many a winter.

The Origins of the Bellows
Bellows were less prevalent in homes in centuries past, being used instead by blacksmiths to keep their furnaces burning at high temperatures. Bellows were also large, sometimes as long as eight feet, and required a lot of strength to operate. They did eventually migrate into homes, much smaller in size, of course!

Today, bellows should be in just about any home with a fireplace. They generate much more air for stoking a fire than you can by blowing on the kindling. Bellows are also inexpensive, selling for as little as $10, although there are plenty of artistic versions on the market. Some are originals, made with hand carved wood, and sell for more.

Bellows are not necessary if you are operating a gas or electric log. Those kinds of logs do not rely on wood for their fuel source. That has not deterred people from continuing to use wood for the fireplaces. Plenty of people still use the real thing for their winter heat in the family room. As long as people continue to burn natural fires in their homes, the bellows will never become obsolete.

Andirons are one of those purchases you will make for your fireplace that can give it an immensely elegant quality. Its also possible to buy andirons that are more rustic and down-home, since there are literally hundreds of different designs available. Whichever you choose, they are an important, functional way to keep a fire burning.

Using Andirons in Your Fireplace
Andirons raise the wood from the ground, helping facilitate better air flow to the fire. Air is typically sucked from under the logs more efficiently, to keep a fire burning hotter and help it grow as it is just starting. They also prevent wood from rolling out of the fireplace as the logs burn down and break.

The simplest andiron designs are wrought iron, and are usually not very ornate. They are plain, but do their job as well as solid brass designs, and at a much lower cost. Solid brass andirons can be as much as $1,500 for a pair, while plain iron is closer to $50.

Andirons are known by different names in different regions of America. The northern states commonly use the term andirons. Southern states call them dog irons or fire dogs. The word itself was derived from the Old English word aundiren, and also influenced by the Old French andier.
